I’ve been building websites for about 15 years now. When i first learned how to create websites I coded everything manually in html. Then I started using a content management system called Joomla which I used for a couple of years, but for the last 3 years I’ve been building websites only in WordPress.
I absolutely love building websites in WordPress and I can’t imagine there will ever come a day when I will want to use something else.
WordPress provides many amazing benefits for both me the designer and also for the site owner.
Here are the main benefits of WordPress
WordPress is open source software which means that you don’t have to pay for the software (although you can donate if you wish). To read about further benefits of using open source software – click here
Fast Development Speed
I can build advanced, state of the art, fully featured websites extremely quickly, particularly if I’m using themes that I’m already familiar with. One of my favourite themes is called Canvas and is made by WooThemes. Using Canvas I can setup a simple website, with advanced features in a matter of hours! This means I can build great websites for clients who can’t always afford to spend a lot of money.
The fact that millions of people use WordPress to power their website means that it’s extensively tested. I find WordPress to be extremely reliable and mostly free of bugs.
Templates are used to create the look and feel of WordPress sites. This also significantly speeds up the process of site creation. What’s brilliant is that there are literally thousands of templates (known as Themes) available to either download for free, or purchase at a low price. There are some incredible templates available, and some of them such as the Canvas theme I mentioned above also give provide ways to easily modify things like layout, colours, graphics etc.
Easily Extendible / Almost Unlimited Features
There are thousands of plugins available for WordPress. Plugins are like little software programs that plug in to WordPress to provide more features. plug-ins are usually very easy to install and configure, and the majority of plugins are free. There is a massive database of plugins on the WordPress website.
Easy Search Engine Optimisation
If you want your website to rank well in Google then it’s very important to optimize it for your keyword phrases. Using a variety of free plugins it is incredibly easy to effectively optimize a WordPress website.
Social Media Integration
Social media is an important marketing tool for many businesses. There are hundreds of different plugins available for WordPress that make it very easy to integrate social media services and tools into your WordPress website.
Easy to Update for website owners
I’ve found that most business owners I work with are not usually very tech savvy and would normally struggle to manage updating their website themselves. However WordPress is far less of challenge and most of my clients find it easy to log-in to their WordPress admin and update their site themselves.
A Website for life!
In my opinion, a WordPress website is a site for life. If you feel like you want a new design or layout, you just install and customise a new template (or have someone do it for you). You should never need to have a completely new website designed ever again!
